Earlier this year I travelled to the Northern Island of Japan Hokkaido. Here I was lucky enough to experience the luxury of the some of the rarer ski in, ski out resorts in Japan: Club Med Sahoro and Tomamu.
They are certainly both ideal for families, making all the little things involved with ski trips so much easier and less hassle for Mum and Dad as well as the kids having a ball and never wanting to leave. They really have thought of everything to make it a special holiday, and certainly one the kids will never forget and I’m sure talk about for years after.
The previous season I was lucky enough to get to a few resorts in Canada.
Whistler is one that is always high up there on everyone’s ski wish list and Sun Peaks, for that quieter authentic Canadian small village feel.
I loved both, and certainly have very different things on offer. Personally my favourite was Sun Peaks if you are not after a crazy night life, but still plenty of lovely restaurants and nice little village with most accommodation being so close to the lifts. The big thing for me was the amazing long runs and beautiful scenery. I would certainly go back tomorrow if I could.
Earlier this same season, I also had my own holiday to the main island of Japan, Honshu. We did a bit more sightseeing on this one, spending time in Kyoto, Takayama, and finishing in Tokyo. But we couldn’t go to Japan without fitting in a ski, so spent 5 nights in the cute little village of Nozawa Onsen. I would certainly recommend February as the ideal time to go, we didn’t have to line up for the lifts and even got 40cm of fresh snow overnight!! We stayed in a cute little Japanese Ryokan (a Traditional Japanese Inn) with traditional bedding of course! They certainly make up for it with their polite ways and amazing service. The culture and the people were certainly the highlights for me.
I have been lucky enough to visit Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Thredbo and Perisher and I would have to say I am a little torn on my favourite between Thredbo and Falls Creek – I just love the little village that you can walk around at night between restaurants.
For my next snow trip, I am trying to organise a week in Italy (exact resort still to be decided) and a visit up to the Northern Lights!!
