Zao Onsen
Hidden in the mountains of Japan’s Tohoku region, Zao Onsen Ski Resort is one of Japan’s most unique ski destinations. Famous for its spectacular “Snow Monsters”, trees covered in thick layers of snow and ice. Zao combines incredible skiing with authentic Japanese culture, traditional hot springs and a relaxed alpine atmosphere.
Unlike some of the busier resorts, Zao Onsen offers a traditional and immersive Japanese ski experience. With wide-open runs, exceptional snow quality and a charming historic village filled with steaming onsens, it’s the perfect destination for skiers and snowboarders looking to experience a different side of Japan.
Why Ski Zao Onsen?
Zao Onsen is renowned for its reliable snowfall, unique scenery and authentic atmosphere. Sitting high in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, the resort receives consistent dry powder snow throughout the winter season, creating ideal conditions for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
Off the slopes, visitors can relax in the village’s natural hot springs, enjoy local Japanese cuisine and experience the slower pace of a traditional onsen town.
Terrain & Skiing
Zao Onsen Ski Resort offers over 25 runs spread across multiple interconnected ski areas, catering to beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers and riders.
Zao is an excellent option for first-time skiers and families, with wide groomed runs and gentle learning areas located close to the village.
Intermediate skiers will love the long cruising runs, scenic tree-lined trails and expansive terrain that allows you to ski across different sections of the mountain all day.
Advanced skiers can enjoy powder stashes, ungroomed sections and tree skiing after fresh snowfalls. While Zao is less extreme than some Japanese powder destinations, the snow quality remains exceptional.
One of the highlights of skiing Zao is gliding through the famous Snow Monster corridor near the summit. On clear days, the views across the frozen landscape are simply unforgettable.
The Village Atmosphere
The town of Zao Onsen has been welcoming visitors for over 1,900 years thanks to its natural sulphur-rich hot springs. Traditional ryokans, small family-run hotels, cosy restaurants and narrow snow-covered streets create an authentic Japanese mountain village atmosphere rarely found in larger ski resorts.
Après in Zao is more about relaxing and soaking in the onsens than nightlife, making it ideal for couples, families and travellers wanting a more cultural ski experience.
Onsens & Japanese Culture
No trip to Zao is complete without experiencing the region’s famous onsens. The mineral-rich hot spring waters are believed to have healing properties and are the perfect way to
unwind after a day on the mountain.
Visitors can choose from public bathhouses, outdoor rotenburo baths surrounded by snow or traditional ryokan stays featuring private onsens and authentic Japanese hospitality.
The area is also known for local Yamagata cuisine including ramen, wagyu beef, sake, and hearty winter dishes perfect after a day skiing.
Getting There
Zao Onsen is located in Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture and is easily accessible from Tokyo via Japan’s efficient bullet train network.
Most travellers take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Yamagata before transferring by bus to the resort. Despite feeling remote and traditional, the journey is surprisingly simple and makes Zao an excellent addition to a Japan ski holiday itinerary.
Best Time to Visit
The ski season at Zao Onsen Ski Resort generally runs from December through early May, with peak powder conditions typically occurring from January to February.
