Ski Holiday in Fernie Canada Snowscene Luxury Travel Agency

A lesser-known resort with plenty to offer, Fernie – a must-see Canadian resort

Fernie hadn’t been high on my list of ski resorts to visit before this trip but after spending time here, I completely understand why so many skiers rank it among their absolute favourites. Tucked away in the Canadian Rockies, Fernie has built a reputation for its legendary powder, expansive terrain and laid-back mountain culture. It’s the kind of place that quietly exceeds expectations the moment you arrive.

What makes Fernie so special isn’t just the snow (although the snow really is that good). It’s the combination of big-mountain skiing without the big-resort crowds, the welcoming locals who make you feel like a regular even if it’s your first visit, and a charming downtown that feels like something straight out of a classic ski film.

From the cozy mountain village to the historic downtown filled with independent shops and incredible food, Fernie manages to strike the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re chasing deep powder lines, exploring the forest on snowshoes, or unwinding with après drinks after a full day on the slopes, this mountain town has a way of making you want to stay longer than planned.

If Fernie isn’t already on your ski bucket list, it absolutely should be.

About the Resort

Located among the Rocky Mountains just an hour from Cranbrook Airport, Fernie is one of the most accessible ski resorts in Canada. While Cranbrook is a relatively small airport, it’s known for being reliable and less prone to weather delays than some other mountain airports, making the journey surprisingly smooth.

On arrival we stayed on-mountain at Lizard Creek Lodge, which turned out to be the perfect base for our trip. The lodge is made up of multiple buildings, each housing condos that range from cozy studios to spacious three-bedroom apartments. It’s ideal whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with a group of friends and backs right onto the slopes via a gentle slope. One of the best features? Every building has its own outdoor hot tub. After long days on the mountain, soaking in the hot tub with a drink in hand while snow falls around you quickly becomes a nightly ritual.

Fernie Mountain Village itself is made up of several accommodation properties surrounding the base village area. Here you’ll find everything you need for your trip: rental shops, ski school, cafes, restaurants and the legendary Griz Bar, which locals and visitors alike know as the place to go for lively après-ski.

Fernie Town

Fernie’s historic downtown is just a 10-minute bus ride from the resort, and it’s absolutely worth visiting during your stay. The local shuttle bus departs roughly every hour, so a little planning is required, but it’s an easy and scenic trip down the valley. Most accommodations provide free bus passes, making it a convenient way to explore.

Downtown Fernie has an incredible atmosphere, think western mountain charm mixed with the relaxed energy of a true ski town. Colorful heritage buildings line the streets, and nearly every shop feels unique.

The local boutiques are full of one-of-a-kind finds, from handmade jewelry and artwork to cozy winter clothing and homewares. I ended up picking up a few souvenirs, including a very cute one-of-a-kind western-style handbag that will always remind me of this trip. Others in our group couldn’t resist bringing home artwork and locally made pieces.

And then there’s the food. The dining scene in Fernie seriously impressed us. For a small town, the variety and quality were incredible. One standout was Loaf Italian, which quickly became a group favourite thanks to its warm atmosphere and delicious pasta and pizza.

Highlights

One of the most memorable experiences from the trip was a guided snowshoe adventure through the forests on the mountain.

We started at the base village just after the lifts had closed and made our way slowly up the runs before heading off into the trees, following winding trails through snow covered forest. The silence was incredible, just the sound of snow crunching beneath our snowshoes and the chatter amongst the group. Partway through the hike, we crossed a small frozen stream where our guides stopped at a rustic picnic table hidden in the woods. Waiting for us was a surprise: a round of maple whiskey to warm us up before continuing on. As we began the walk back, the sun was setting behind the mountain, watching the last light fade as we descended back toward the village was nothing short of magical. It was one of those travel moments that sticks with you long after the trip is over.

With its legendary powder, quiet slopes, welcoming locals and one of the quickest airport-to-
resort transfers in the Canadian Rockies, Fernie really does have it all. It’s the kind of place that surprises you in the best possible way. What might start as “just another ski trip” quickly turns into a destination you can’t wait to return to.

So, if Fernie isn’t already on your ski list, consider this your sign. Start planning the trip, pack
your bags and go experience the magic of Fernie for yourself.
