Mt Hutt – NZ’s best Ski Resort

VOTED NZ’S BEST SKI RESORT for 5 CONSECUTIVE YEARS

A scenic 90-minute drive from Christchurch Airport and just 35 minutes from Methven village, you can experience for yourself why Mt Hutt has been voted the Best Ski Resort 5 years running.

Mt Hutt is renowned for its big snowfalls; boasting 4 metres annually. Natural snow is captured in its south facing basin and combined with snow guns, Mt Hutt consistently has one of the longest ski seasons in New Zealand’s South Island.  This longer season works well for Australian school holidays and for the year that 2020 has shaped up to be – a great year to consider Mt Hutt for this year’s September school holidays (whilst we hold our breath for flights to be resumed to get us there)!

For first timers Mt Hutt is a great place to learn to ski, no matter what your age with full day group lesson options, ski school and private lessons available to make your first days on the slopes easier and to get you up and running in no time.  A bonus for families is that kids 10 years and under ski free all season this is the perfect ski destination for families to test out a snow holiday and get involved and active on the slopes together. A great alternative to a cruise or beach holiday.  What can the grandparents do? Well of course they can ski too however there are plenty of sightseeing activities locally, easier with a car and also up on the mountain – scenic chair lift rides with stunning views over the Canterbury Plains topped by a hot chocolate with grandchildren.

Mt Hutt has wide open terrain to suit all abilities – it is a big mountain (365 hectares in fact) and certainly a crowd favourite with the most advanced skiers and snowboarders due to its incredible snowfalls, off-piste areas and extensive powder bowls at South Face and the Rakaia Saddle Chutes and for those with strong ski legs and of an intermediate ability you can enjoy one of the longest vertical drops in the South Island of New Zealand.

There’s a lot to love with the superb conditions, spectacular terrain, laid back kiwi hospitality, and even a hot tub accessible off the Summit Six Chairlift that soaks up the highest altitude views in New Zealand; perched at the top of Mt Hutt – clothes required folks.

A great advantage for IKON pass holders is that you have 7 days to explore Mt Hutt on the full IKON pass – ski New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern to follow. We have some enticing itinerary suggestions so you make the most out of your pass choice if this is the way you decide to go. The Ikon Pass is your opportunity to access unique terrain at 43 of the most iconic winter destinations around the world, join a like-minded community, and seek out new adventures as you explore all that the mountains have to offer.

For the 2020 upcoming season our team of experienced staff will be across what is the best product offering with some uncertainty on where and when we can travel during these COVID times.

Exciting to still be planning all the same.
