Queenstown… other than snow sports

But wait, there’s more……So much to do in Queenstown

In a recent blog I told you about my own off-snow experiences in Queenstown but I feel it would be remiss of me not to mention some of the other activities on offer for anyone wanting a break from the snow.

Here are six of the best. There are so many – however some crowd favourites:

1. Skydiving and Paragliding

Possibly the ultimate adrenaline rush is jumping out of a plane. If that appeals to you, there are a number of operators in Queenstown, all of whom have excellent safety records.Skydive Southern Alps offers an unforgettable experience. Your experienced tandem partner will be operating a GoPro and you can purchase the footage of your daring leap.Paragliding is another option – certainly no less thrilling. Take off from a gentle slope or try a higher point. Either way you are harnessed to an experienced pilot and you can choose to enjoy a relaxed scenic flight or try something more acrobatic for the thrill seekers out there. Our client recently did this over Glenorchy – and the scenery is just stunning.

2. Dog Sledding

If you thought this activity could only be experienced in North America, you might be surprised to learn that it is available in Queenstown. Underdog has the only North American sled dog team in New Zealand and runs tours (in Summer and Winter) through Snow Farm in the Southern Alps. Choose to ride as a passenger and let an experienced guide steer the sled or drive the team yourself but the more adventurous can take a four and a half hour night-time ride.Visit the Underdog website find out the names of the dogs and their history as well as more information about this exciting adventure. Closer to home there is also dog sledding in Mt Buller which our customers just love.

3. Onsen hot pools

Located on a cliffside overlooking the beautiful Shotover River Canyon, you will find the perfect off-snow day activity to relax and warm you. No matter the weather you can luxuriate in the pure water of these onsen hot pools where the temperature will be customised for you. Each pool accommodates four adults – perfect for family groups or friends and with the press of a button which retracts the roof, you can change your pool room from indoor to outdoor. This is simply a magical experience in a magical setting. This is one of my personal favourites.

4. Star Gazing

Enjoy 60 minutes of spectacular star gazing through powerful telescopes. Lead by experienced guides, you will explore the wonders of the southern night sky. No matter the weather, this is a unique experience. To make it extra special why not add dinner but don’t forget to dress warmly! We were given Canada Goose jackets as part of our tour which were well needed. Our layering piece is a good read.

5. Gondola and Luge

A great way to see the city of Queenstown from up high is the gondola/luge combo. Jump aboard the gondola a mere five minute walk from the centre of Queenstown. You’ll be treated to stunning views as you are carried up the mountainside. Once at the top, grab a bite to eat or jump straight onto the luge and travel 800 metres on a custom built track with banked corners and narrow runways – an altogether spectacular ride.

6. Dart River Experience

Enjoy the thrill of a jet boat ride up the Dart River and then travel back down at your own pace in a kayak. Explore the hidden streams and magical scenery in this beautiful part of the world. A complimentary return shuttle from Queenstown is part of the trip but if you drive yourself, you can take your time and explore the beautiful Glenorchy.

If you would like to include any (or all) of these activities into your next trip to Queenstown, contact the Snowscene team and they will help you make it happen
